Travel between Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geyser, and Gullfoss Waterfall. We visit the ancient Viking Parliament area and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir National Park. The Thingvellir Plain is situated on a tectonic plate boundary where North America and Europe are slowly tearing away from each other. As a result, the plain is scarred by dramatic fissures, ponds, and rivers, including the great rift Almannagjá. We walk through the active geothermal area of Geysir, where Strokkur “the churn” spouts up to 25 meters (70 feet) every five to seven minutes. Gullfoss, translated to ‘Golden Falls’ is one of Iceland’s most iconic and beloved double waterfalls, found in the Hvítá river canyon. The Golden Circle tour is a perfect introduction for first-time visitors to Iceland and a highlight of any Iceland program. Overnight in Reykjavik Meals: Breakfast DAY 4 South Shore of Iceland, 400 km / 10 hours Explore glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and bird cliffs. Visit the beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, known for its unique structure – as the cliffs behind the waterfall have a wide cavern, allowing everyone to fully encircle the waterfall from behind. In the same area, you can find two more stunning waterfalls, only a few minutes walk away. Gljúfrafoss is a wonderful 40-metre waterfall hiding in a narrow secret canyon. On the way to Gljúfrafoss, you see another glamorous waterfall, which proudly shows its beauty in a marvelous area, surrounded by mountains, rivers, and extremely fresh air. Make sure to bring rainwear, as you have a high chance of getting wet from the drizzle. Your next stop is the majestic waterfall Skógafoss, which means “forest waterfall’ in Icelandic. This is one of Iceland’s largest and most beautiful waterfalls, with a dramatic 60-metre drop (197 feet), and one of the few waterfalls that can be viewed from the top. During this journey, you can enjoy fine vistas of Sólheimajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers and Eyjafjallajökull volcano. We visit the famous Reynisfjara – also known as the Black Sand Beach. You will also be welcomed at this breathtaking place by massive basalt columns that have a special shape because of the way the lava cools. It is very rare to find such long and solid basalt columns anywhere else in the world. The photogenic Dýrhólaey cliffs are also very well seen in this area. These cliffs are a paradise for bird lovers, as puffins, razorbills, and dozens of other species nest on top of these cliffs in the summertime. The southernmost part of this day tour is Vík, a remote seaside village found south of the Katla volcano and Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Overnight in Reykjavik Meals: Breakfast DAY 5 Private Mythical Snaefellsnes Tour, 450 km / 11 hours The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is a place where nature, history, and folklore come together to form a place of rugged beauty and mysterious charm. Jules Verne used Snæfellsjökull glacier, the volcano at the western tip of the peninsula, as the gateway in his story “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, it was also used as a backdrop in the film version from 2007 starring Brendan Frasier and Icelandic actress Anita Briem. Icelandic novelist and Nobel Laureate Halldór Laxness also set one of his best novels, “Under the Glacier”, here.
